Let's Talk About Digestive Health (And Why It's So Important!)

Its no secret digestive health affects the whole body – pretty much every aspect of our overall wellness, from weight, to immunity, to mood. And good gut health isn’t just linked to good physical health, but mental health too.

Yup, healthy gut = healthy life. 

So what makes the cut for a healthy gut?

A healthy gut contains healthy bacteria and immune cells that ward off infectious little creatures like bacteria, viruses and fungi. Plus if the gut is healthy, it will tell the brain through nerves and hormones, which helps maintain good healthy vibes.

A healthy gut also means organs such as the esophagus, stomach and intestines are in tiptop shape, working together to allow us to eat and digest food easily and comfortably. And a healthy, happy digestive system equals nutrients (hello vitamins and minerals!) in our bodies. 

Wait. Did you say healthy digestion?

We did. And good digestion needs a few factors to function fabulously, like:

Filling up on that fibre! Fact - our intestines need good bacteria! There’s gazillions of different bacteria types in our guts, which help break down food further – like fibre, which help keep our bowel motions in er, motion.

Loving our liver. Healthy liver breaks down beneficial fats in our diet and detoxifies - so keep the saturated fats, caffeine, sugar and alcohol to a minimum.

Chilling out. We can’t digest if we’re stressed.

Chew, chew, chewing. Our mouth isn’t just for talking. It has digestive enzymes that help break food down too! 

Don’t worry – there are plenty o’ foods for a healthy gut.

Plant based diets are great for healthy and happy guts. Choose seasonal and local produce for your food plate, along with plant-based protein (read: legumes and lentils). Heap on some healthy fats (enter avocado or olive oil) and voila – you have one happy gut.

If plant based diets aren’t your thang, try including a healthy mix of protein (chicken, fish, lamb or eggs), along with a handful of veggies.

Whatever your preference, make sure probiotics play a big part too. Yoghurt, Yakult and fermented foods like sauerkraut, kefir, kimchi and kombucha all pack a probiotic punch.
